Your Specac update from David Smith

At Specac, we’ve just begun our 49th year, and it promises to be another exciting one. Within the next month, we’re relocating our UK headquarters 1km along the road to a brand-new facility in Orpington, South-East London. It’s still being fitted out as I write this. The Science and Innovation Centre will offer us greater assembly capacity, more flexibility, more environmentally controlled production cells, and more office space.

Specac's New Building

More importantly, our new home offers us the chance to provide even better quality and customer service to the people that matter, that’s you the customer. We are also committed to doing the right thing by the environment, from the solar panels on the roof to the amount of photocopier paper we use. We’re planning a Grand Opening Day in July, so please let us know if you would particularly like to attend.

A key reason for the growth in our business in the last few years has been our desire to get closer to our customers geographically. While most of our staff are employed at our UK site, we now have a facility in Fort Washington, just outside Philadelphia, with four staff. We also have Specac employees in China and Singapore. Such is the opportunity that we believe exists in Asia for us to find more customers to work with, we’ve decided to employ a second salesperson in China in the next few months. Do tell us if you know of anybody that might be interested and would fit the bill.

We are not content to keep doing the same things at Specac, so we are always looking for new solutions for our customers. Our Application Scientists are focused on exploring new markets, and we are at the forefront of the burgeoning use of FTIR in the field of life sciences and clinical and non-clinical diagnostics. Our digital marketing team is also looking to demonstrate our offering of process cells and in XRF. Our watchword in ‘boldness’ in all of our thinking.

Our design and engineering team is also working flat out to bring new innovations to market. We have several projects on the go, including four additional pucks for our market leading ATR, the Quest. We already offer Diamond, Zinc Selenide, Germanium, Silicon and Specular reflectance pucks. Watch this space, one of our new pucks has the potential to revolutionise the way ATR is used in the lab.

Exports are the life-blood of our business, and now the Brexit deadline has been extended, we’re looking forward to a period of ‘normal’ running with our foreign based partners. As part of getting close to our distributors, we’ll be holding a Distributor Conference in Singapore in October, and partners from across the Asian region will be invited. On top of this, we’ll have colleagues at a number of trade shows and conferences in the coming months, and I hope you’ll be able to spend some time with them.

It’s a great time to be working at Specac, and I hope you have the same privilege that we do, where every day offers a new challenge, and to have fun as we grow together.
